How does Finland do so much better than the US in education? They do everything differently.
Almost no standardized testing, well prepared teachers, huge respect for the teaching profession, professional autonomy for teachers, competitive entry system for teachers, a system controlled from the bottom up, and a much reduced emphasis on competitiveness in their education system.

This is a very interesting point, Finland does profoundly better in school than the US. Why? It seems to me they do everything opposite that we do. Such as mentioned standardized testing, and well prepared teachers. I agree that teachers should be well prepared. I know from personal experience that there are some bad teachers who do not know what they are doing, nor did they care. I also had great teachers who inspired me to be a teacher, I think it would do a lot of good for our schools if we had better trained teachers who did not just have to teach the standardized test.
